In today’s time, emergency contraception has become very common. Many women use the Unwanted 72 tablet after unprotected intercourse or when a contraceptive fails. It gives a quick solution, but very few people actually understand what it does inside the body. As an Ayurvedic nutritionist, many women come up with queries like, how unwanted 72 works, how to take Unwanted 72 pill and also I see many women coming with complaints like delayed periods, hormonal imbalance, acne, mood swings and digestion issues after frequent use of such pills. So the real question is not just does it work but also what does it do to your body. Let us understand this in a simple and practical way.

What is an Unwanted 72 Tablet ?

Unwanted 72 is an emergency contraceptive pill that contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone similar to progesterone. This hormone plays an important role in regulating the menstrual cycle and ovulation in a woman’s body. Unwanted 72 Tablet is used in situations like:

  • Unprotected intercourse
  • Condom leakage
  • Missed birth control pills
  • As a treatment for PCOS/ PCOD

It should be taken within 72 hours of intercourse for best effectiveness.

How Unwanted 72 works ?

  • Once consumed, it works by temporarily altering the natural hormonal balance of the body. Its primary action is to delay or prevent ovulation, which means it stops the ovary from releasing an egg. If there is no egg available, fertilization cannot take place.
  • In addition to this, it may also thicken the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to travel towards the egg. In some cases, it can also affect the uterine lining, reducing the chances of implantation.

However, it is important to understand that this pill does not work if pregnancy has already occurred. It is not an abortion pill, but only a preventive method used after a possible risk of conception.

Benefits of Unwanted 72

  • Helps prevent unwanted pregnancy
  • Easy to use single dose
  • Works well in emergency situations
  • Easily available

For occasional use, it can be helpful and safe. But the concern starts when it is used frequently.

Side Effects of Unwanted 72

Since it is a high dose hormone pill, it can disturb your body’s natural rhythm. Common Side Effects include-

  • Nausea
  • Irregular periods
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Headache

These symptoms usually settle, but repeated use can create deeper imbalance.

Long Term Effects of Frequent Use

  • Frequent use of Unwanted 72 can disturb the natural hormonal balance of the body, especially estrogen and progesterone levels.
  • It may lead to irregular menstrual cycles, where periods can become delayed, come early, or even skip.
  • Some women may start experiencing symptoms such as weight gain, irregular ovulation, and difficulty in managing weight.
  • Skin issues like acne, oily skin, and dullness can increase due to hormonal fluctuations.
  • Mood changes such as irritability, anxiety, low energy, and emotional imbalance are commonly seen.
  • Repeated use can also affect mental well being, as hormones are closely linked to brain function.

Ayurvedic Perspective

Ayurveda focuses on balance, not suppression. It does not support sudden hormonal interference but aims to correct the root cause of imbalance. When the body is balanced internally, hormones naturally become stable and reproductive health improves sustainably

  • Proper digestion or Agni is the foundation of hormonal health, as it nourishes all body tissues including Artava dhatu (reproductive tissue).
  • Weak digestion leads to formation of Ama or toxins, which can disturb hormones and menstrual cycles.
  • Imbalance in Tridoshas can lead to irregular periods, pain, and hormonal disturbances.
  • Mental health plays a major role, as stress and anxiety can directly affect hormonal balance.
  • Lifestyle factors like poor sleep, irregular eating habits, and lack of routine can worsen reproductive health.
  • Ayurveda focuses on long term healing through diet, lifestyle, and natural therapies rather than quick fixes.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Reproductive Health Support

There is no direct replacement for emergency pills in Ayurveda, but there are some herbs which help in maintaining hormonal balance and uterine health.

  • Ashoka- Helps regulate menstrual cycles and supports uterine strength. It is especially useful in managing heavy bleeding and irregular periods.
  • Lodhra- Known for its cooling and stabilizing properties, it helps balance hormones and is beneficial in PCOS like symptoms and excess discharge.
  • Shatavari– A powerful female tonic that nourishes reproductive tissues and supports natural hormonal balance. It also helps in improving fertility and overall strength.
  • Daruharidra- Supports liver detoxification and helps in proper hormone metabolism. It also reduces inflammation in the reproductive system.
  • Banslochan (Bambusa arundinacea)- Acts as a natural rejuvenator and strengthens body tissues. It supports overall vitality and reproductive health.
  • Eranda (Ricinus communis)- Helps in balancing Vata and supports proper menstrual flow. It is also useful in reducing pelvic congestion and improving circulation.
  • Guduchi- Boosts immunity and helps in detoxifying the body. It supports hormonal balance by reducing inflammation and improving metabolism.
  • Aloe Vera- Helps in regulating menstrual cycles and improving digestion. It also supports detoxification and hormonal health when used properly.

All the herbs must be used under guidance of an ayurvedic expert. Deep Ayurveda has initiated Purshveda clinic which provides ayurvedic solutions to all fertility related issues. You can also book your consultation and get guidance from experts.

When Should You Use Unwanted 72?

Only in emergency situations like:

  • Unprotected intercourse
  • Contraceptive failure
  • Urgent need to avoid pregnancy
  • Not as a regular medication in case of PCOS/ PCOD

When to Consult a Doctor?

  • Period delay more than 7 days
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Severe pain
  • Repeated need for emergency pills
  • Signs of hormonal imbalance

Final Thoughts

Unwanted 72 tablet can be helpful in an emergency, but it is not a long term solution. Frequent use may disturb your natural hormonal rhythm and reproductive health. Ayurveda teaches us that the body works best when it is supported, not forced. By focusing on proper diet, herbs, and lifestyle, you can maintain hormonal balance naturally and safely. If you find yourself depending on such pills often, it is a sign that your body needs deeper care, not just quick fixes.
