Ashwagandha Trial for Covid-19 recovery: The government is promoting Ayurveda for Covid-19 recovery all over India and now has also initiated a trial abroad, seeking to boost the Indian traditional medicine system.
The government has selected the UK to conduct a study on a well-known Ayurvedic herb ‘Ashwagandha’, and assess its effects on 2,000 people suffering from Covid symptoms like chronic fatigue, headache, stress, and sleeplessness.
The study will be a collective effort between the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), an independent body under the Ministry of Ayush, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), as per the government statement.
It will be organized in three major cities of the United Kingdom, namely London (Southall and Wembley), Leicester and Birmingham. The W.H.O. (World Health Organisation) is also the knowledge partner in this study.
The principal investigators of the study will be AIIA director Dr. Tanuja Nesari and Dr. Sanjay Kinra, professor of clinical epidemiology at LSHTM. The London institute confirmed that the study will start around September this year.
Good Initiative by Ministry of Ayush on Ashwagandha Trial for Covid-19 recovery:
The Ashwagandha Trial for Covid-19 recovery will be of 3 months where the participants will have to take Ashwagandha Herb for 3 months and the test will go for 1 year. If successfully conducted, it can be a ground-breaking step forward for Ayurveda.
The participants will take Ashwagandha in the dose of 500 mg tablets twice a day in Ashwagandha Trial for Covid-19 recovery. It will be observed how much relief is there from the symptoms of Covid. One more thing will be analyzed if the quality of life has improved for the participants over the given time compared to participants taking placebo treatment.
AIIA director Dr. Tanuja Nesari said: “It will take another two months for the Ashwagandha to be shipped to the United Kingdom, once labeling, packaging, and all the regulatory essential for approvals are completed.”
Ashwagandha tablets are presently being manufactured at two pharma companies situated in Chennai and Bengaluru. The trial has got approval from United Kingdom’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency and is certified by WHO Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO-GMP).
