Giloy, also known as Guduchi or Amrita, is one of the most respected herbs in Ayurveda. The name Amrita means “nectar of immortality,” showing its importance in traditional Ayurvedic healing. As an Ayurvedic Nutritionist, many women consult me for health concerns related to immunity, skin health, metabolism, digestion, energy levels, and reproductive wellness which are caused due to stress, poor eating habits, hormonal imbalance, sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep, and increasing exposure to processed foods and pollution. This article explains giloy benefits for females from Ayurvedic and research based perspectives, along with formulations, dosage, and precautions.

What is Giloy in Ayurveda?

Ayurveda believes that when Doshas become imbalanced and Ama or toxins accumulate in the body, health problems begin to appear. Giloy is considered a Rasayana herb, meaning it helps rejuvenate the body, improve vitality, and support long term wellness.

According to Ayurveda, Giloy has:

  • Rasa (Taste): Tikta (Bitter) and Kashaya (Astringent)
  • Virya (Potency): Ushna (Heating)
  • Vipaka (Post-digestive effect): Madhura (Sweet)
  • Guna (Quality): Laghu (Light) and Snigdha (Slightly unctuous)

Giloy is considered Tridosha balancing (Tridosha Shamak). Ayurveda classify Giloy as a-

  • Rasayana meaning rejuvenating
  • Deepana meaning digestive fire enhancing
  • Jwarahara meaning fever reducing
  • Balya meaning strength promoting
  • Medhya meaning supportive for mental wellness

Giloy Benefits for Female

  • Helps Strengthen Immunity Naturally- Women with low immunity often experience recurrent cough, cold, throat irritation, fever, fatigue, and seasonal infections. Giloy helps improve digestion and reduce toxin accumulation, which supports stronger immunity. Giloy contains active compounds like polysaccharides, alkaloids, and diterpenoid lactones that are associated with immunomodulatory activity. These compounds may help improve the body’s defense response.
  • Supports Hormonal Balance- Hormonal imbalance in women causes irregular periods, acne, mood swings, bloating, fatigue, and weight fluctuations. Giloy supports digestion, liver health, and detoxification, which helps maintain hormonal balance. Giloy contains flavonoids and terpenoids that exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
  • Beneficial for Skin Health and Natural Glow- Active compounds such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and glycosides contribute to its antioxidant properties. These compounds may help reduce oxidative stress, which is one of the factors associated with premature skin aging and inflammation.
  • Helps Manage Stress and Fatigue- Giloy is considered a Rasayana herb that helps nourish the body and improve resilience against stress. It contains alkaloids and glycosides that may contribute to its adaptogenic effects.

  • May Support Weight Management- Active compounds such as diterpenoid lactones and alkaloids may help support metabolic activity and reduce inflammation. Some studies suggest Giloy may help improve metabolic parameters and oxidative balance, which are important for healthy weight management.

Giloy is commonly used during monsoon and winter because it helps support immunity and adapt to changing environmental conditions. Its antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties make it a popular Ayurvedic herb for seasonal wellness support.
