A study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia has highlighted the steep increase in caesarean deliveries in India, rising from 8.5% in 2005 to 21.5% in 2021 — much higher than the levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
A caesarean section (C-section) is a surgical procedure in which a baby is delivered through an incision made in the mother’s abdomen and uterus.
The researchers, from the Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru, and Christian Medical College, Vellore, stressed that while C-sections are life-saving when medically necessary, higher rates beyond 10% at the population level do not reduce maternal or newborn deaths. They called for stronger policies and tighter regulation in the private healthcare sector to address the issue.
