Gout is a painful arthritis condition caused by excess uric acid crystals in the joints. It leads to swelling, redness, stiffness, and sudden attacks of pain. Modern medicines like allopurinol and NSAIDs can relieve symptoms but often cause side effects.
In Ayurveda, gout is compared to Vatarakta, a disorder where aggravated Vata and vitiated blood (Rakta) cause severe joint pain and inflammation. Ayurvedic gout treatment aims to balance doshas, purify blood, improve digestion, and relieve pain naturally.
The Clinical Study
A comparative study was conducted on 60 patients with gout (Vatarakta). Two Ayurvedic medicines were tested:
- Nimbadi Churna (a herbal powder with Neem, Guduchi, Amla, Haritaki, Turmeric, etc.)
- Kokilakshadi Kwath (a decoction made with Kokilaksha, Guduchi, and Pippali)
- Patients were treated for 28 days with weekly follow-ups.
Results:
- Both medicines significantly reduced pain, stiffness, swelling, and uric acid levels.
- Nimbadi Churna showed around 64% improvement.
- Kokilakshadi Kwath showed slightly better results, around 77%.
- No side effects were observed in either group.
Why They Work
- Nimbadi Churna: Detoxifies blood, improves digestion, reduces inflammation, balances Vata and Pitta.
- Kokilakshadi Kwath: Acts as a natural diuretic, supports kidney function, helps flush uric acid, and reduces swelling.

Takeaway
Both Nimbadi Churna and Kokilakshadi Kwath are effective options for Ayurvedic gout treatment. They not only relieve pain but also help address the root cause by balancing doshas and reducing uric acid naturally—without the side effects of conventional drugs.
For best results, combine these remedies with lifestyle changes: avoid alcohol, red meat, and high-purine foods, drink plenty of water, and include light exercise or yoga.
