Punjab is facing a serious flood situation after record excess rainfall over the weekend. The state received 48 mm of rain, which is 1,272% more than usual. Neighboring states were also hit hard, with Haryana recording 702% excess rainfall and Himachal Pradesh 554% more rainfall than normal.
Rivers Overflow due to excess Rainfall Reported
The Beas, Sutlej, and Ravi rivers are swollen due to heavy rain and water released from dams like Bhakra, Pong, and Ranjit Sagar. Low-lying areas, farmland, and villages near the rivers have been flooded.
Schools Shut and People Moved to Safe Areas
To keep people safe, schools have been closed in districts like Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, and Ferozepur. Authorities are moving residents from flooded villages to safer places. Relief camps have been set up with food, water, and medical help.
Rescue Efforts
The government has set up a flood control center in Jalandhar to coordinate relief work. NDRF, SDRF, and local police are helping with rescue operations and monitoring river levels.
Weather Ahead
The IMD (India Meteorological Department) says heavy rain may continue in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh until August 30. Areas like Ferozepur and Fazilka are at high risk, so people are advised to stay alert and follow official safety instructions.
Tricity Weather Update
In the Chandigarh Tricity region, which includes Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, the weather is currently cloudy with light rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Watch for heavy rainfall in the region, indicating that heavy rain with thunderstorms is likely to occur at isolated places over the next 24 hours.
Residents are advised to stay indoors during heavy rain, avoid travel in flood-prone areas, and follow safety instructions from local authorities.
