An Ayurvedic herb, long trusted in traditional medicine for healing fractures, has now been scientifically upgraded using nanotechnology—bringing new hope for people suffering from weak and brittle bones.
What is Hadjod herb?
The plant is Cissus quadrangularis, popularly known in Ayurveda as Hadjod or “bone setter.” For centuries, Indian households and traditional healers have used it to help fractured bones heal faster. Apart from bone health, the plant is also believed to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
What did researchers do?
Scientists from PGIMER and Panjab University noticed that while the herb was powerful, the body absorbed very little of it—only about 30% of its benefits reached the bones. To solve this, they created a nano-formulation, where the active ingredients are packed into tiny lipid-based particles. This new form showed a much higher absorption—up to 76% in preclinical studies.
Why is this important?
Low absorption has always been a major hurdle for herbal medicines. With nanotechnology, this Ayurvedic remedy becomes more effective, ensuring that the medicinal compounds actually reach bone tissue.
How will it help patients?
The new formulation is being developed into easy-to-consume capsules and could be especially useful for:
- Post-menopausal women at risk of osteoporosis
- Elderly people with brittle bones
- Fracture patients who need faster bone healing
- Individuals seeking natural bone support as a daily supplement
