The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall of Friendly’s Vanilla Bean Ice-Cream (48 oz cartons) after a packaging error led to undeclared allergens being present in the product. The recall was announced after it was found that several Vanilla Bean cartons were mistakenly filled with Cookies & Cream ice-cream. Despite the flavor switch, the cartons were still labeled as Vanilla Bean.
Allergen Risk
The Cookies & Cream variety contains soy and wheat, two common allergens. Since the Vanilla Bean label does not list these ingredients, people with allergies could unknowingly consume them. Health experts warn that this can cause life-threatening reactions in allergic people.
According to reports, around 324 cartons were affected by the labeling mix-up. The products were distributed in select markets before the error was discovered.
Advice for Ice-cream Consumers
Consumers are advised to:
- Check the product carefully to see if it may be mislabelled.
- Avoid consumption if unsure about allergens.
- Return the product if found unsafe
Why It Matters
Food labeling mistakes may seem minor, but for people with allergies, they can be extremely dangerous. The FDA emphasized that strict labeling practices are vital to protecting public health and consumer trust.
