Chandigarh- 8th July 2021: Giloy Damages Liver- This Controversial and misleading journal was published by the Mumbai doctors on Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia). They published in a journal that Giloy damaged the liver of six patients as they were taken the Giloy, This herb is known as amrita promoted by the ministry of Ayush during covid pandemic and is widely popular as an immunomodulator. Ministry of Ayush also replied to this Controversial study and condemned this publication.
Ayush spokesperson told that after analyzing the study, it was also discovered that the study authors did not analyze the constituents of the herb that the patients had taken. It is the responsibility of the authors to ensure that the herbs which patients consumed were giloy Tinospora cordifolia or Tinospora crispa, or some other herb. The authors should have taken the opinion of a botanist or at least consulted an ayurvedic expert to arrive at a concrete conclusion.
In fact, A similar herb to Tinospora cordifolia is Tinospora crispa, which can have negative effects on the liver and there are many studies that show that herbs can have harmful consequences if they are not properly identified. Therefore, before labeling a herb like Giloy as poisonous, the authors should have correctly identified the said plant under standard guidelines, which they did not. In addition, there are many inaccuracies in the study as well.
Further other Ayurveda experts from different Ayurveda organizations also given their replies and condemned this misleading & controversial study “Giloy Damage Liver”, Chief Ayurveda Consultant & Founder of Deep Ayurveda, Dr Baldeep Kour told that this study is completely fake and doest have proper scientific base. This type of irresponsible and baseless study creating the myth toward the faith of the public in Ayurveda. Giloy is our national medicinal plant and lot of studies & journals have already been published on Tinospora cordifolia, Even TC is very beneficial in liver-related disorders if consume under the supervision of Ayurveda consultant and mild usage of Giloy is also never shown any adverse effect on human.
Dr Baldeep Kour, further told that Medicine is medicine either allopthy or Ayurveda or homeopathic and it should be taken under doctor’s supervision but to clear some facts in Ayurveda there are some herbs which are tridosha shamak or it means, they can balance and pacify all the three doshas- VATA PITTA AND KAPHA or according to the modern point of view they are natural antioxidants, loaded with all essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals etc, detoxifies and boosts healthy cell growth and creates a harmony in the body for the proper working of all systems and organs. Those who possess such properties, come under rasayan aushadis (Rejuvenating herbs) in Ayurved which anyone can take to maintain health. So there comes the concept of herbal supplements. So one can take some good Ayurveda herbs according to their need and lifestyle or ailments.to add more, our lifestyle is very disturbed these days, weather conditions, pollution, season change, stress, age and there are so many other factor need to be considered before taking any supplement too. So it should be good, if one takes ayurved herbs under the supervision of good Ayurved practitioners for maximum benefits or can choose wisely. Even overeating has a lot of side effects and here we are talking about medicinal herbs. So, “Giloy Damage Liver” this kind of study is totally fake, baseless, and doesn’t having any authentication.
